Henry IV

(The Apprenticeship of Young Prince Hal)

Directed by John Slade

This production is called Henry IV, but it’s really a play about Henry’s prodigal son Hal, a rebellious lad who stays out late and doesn’t get on well with his royal dad. Prince Hal has adopted a surrogate father, a magnificently corpulent barfly and force of nature named Jack Falstaff, to teach him the sensual joys of fine wine, women, and the adolescent art of avoiding one’s destiny. Director John Slade’s adaptation combines both parts of Henry IV into one seamless and satisfying play containing some of the warmest – and funniest – scenes in all Shakespeare.

Two young lovers, two sets of warring brothers, and an out of work stand-up comic who finds himself in the last place he ever imagined. This is As You Like It, set against the backdrop of 1971. The inhabitants of a tropical island called Arden play host to a variety of banished characters who’ve ‘dropped out, tuned in, turned on”, and now find themselves at the mercy of Mother Earth. With music by Dylan, Guthrie, Mitchell, and Joplin and lyrics by William Shakespeare, this As You Like It lives up to its description as “the most joyous of the joyous comedies”.
